Entered according to Act of Congress March 20, 1896 by Anheuser Busch Brewery. The Milwaukee Litho Company We are pleased to offer an excellent impression of the famous lithographic poster that depicts the last minutes of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. This early state of the image does not include the later promotional statement for Budweiser Beer and is in a very bright and clean condition. The print measures 29 1/2" x 38"; the blank margins were trimmed early on for framing, but the text and image areas are unaffected. When framed, the print included a contemporary, hand-lettered 1 1/2" x 21 1/4" strip of the trimmed margin reading: Be sure to tell your friends to plan their next trip over the Custer Hiway. Various characters in the scene are identified just below the image in pale gray lettering too small to pick up in the photograph. Reading from left to right, they are as follows: Sioux Warrior Who Killed Custer; Rain in the Face; Autie Reed Custer's nephew; Cheyanne Warrior; Half Breed; Capt. T. W. Custer; General Custer; Half Breed; Lieut. A. E. Smith; Lieut. Cook; Capt. G. W. Gates; Lieut. W. Van W. Reily; Courier from Sitting Bull; Squaw Killing Wounded. Provenance: from the estate of Maxwell Hunley, noted Los Angeles book seller. $12,000.00
